Most often, it is easy for a budget-friendly gadget to become one of the best selling products. However, a dirt-cheap price tag often makes us ignore the true potential of a gadget.
Thus, we tried out the Amazon Fire 7 (9th Generation) Tablet to check if it really is worth the hype. Yes, it’s an affordable option for kids and students but why get a lousy gadget when you can get a much better one with a few more bucks, right?
The Amazon Fire 7 Tablet comes in two versions which differ in storage. The 16 GB version costs around $50 (excluding customs and shipping fees required to reach us!) while the 32 GB version is for $70 approximately. Another difference is that the former will keep flashing ads and special offers on the screen.
Moreover, you get 4 color options— black, twilight blue, plum, and sage.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX?
- Micro USB charging cable and brick
- 2 user manuals
- 7 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels
- Micro SD slot that supports up to 512 GB
- 1.3 GHz Quad-Core processor
- Dual-band wifi
- 2 MP front and rear camera with 720 pixels HD recording
- 7 hrs of watching videos, listening to music, reading ebooks, browsing the web, etc.
- 1 GB ram
- Handsfree Alexa
The ‘chunky look’ of the Fire 7 tablet may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s pretty heavy and looks rather old fashioned. However, the matte black finish saves it from looking like a complete disaster. Also, 7 inches seem like a pretty comfortable size to hold — big enough to watch videos and small enough to carry around.
The SD card slot is on the right and the speaker on the bottom left side. The top portion consists of the power button, charging port, mic, 3.5mm headphone jack and volume buttons.
A major drawback is the screen being extremely susceptible to dirt and fingerprints. So if you’re a clean freak, get ready to wipe it after each use!
If we had to describe the setup process in two words, we’d say— unnecessarily long. The update takes too long, the video introducing glorifying the tablet is too long and just… everything, in general, takes too long on this tablet! It misses no chance to shove Amazon-owned sites and apps in your face. Now, we know why the tablet is so cheap in the first place!
VIDEO AND TEXT CLARITY
According to my personal experience, videos and texts look pretty average or maybe even below average. One usually buys a tablet to enjoy movies and read ebooks but with no HD display, what’s even the point anymore? The contrast isn’t as ‘crisp’ as the packaging suggests so it’s definitely going to tire your eyes.
Since I’m not much of a gamer, I just tried out some of the easiest games like Candy Crush and Clash of Clans. The experience was enjoyable but if you’re a hardcore gamer and more into heavy-duty games like PubG, Call of Duty, etc., this tablet may not be the one for you.
Yet again, the sound quality is decent but your phone can sound better than that! With a single speaker, we cannot expect much either.
Knowing that the tablet has 2MP cameras, we had our expectations low already. Amazon could have easily done away with the cameras and worked harder on other features instead.
SPEED AND BATTERY LIFE
Slower than a sloth, for sure! Even swiping through the home screen took ages and I was a frustrated wreck. Hence, the caution sign about playing heavy games on the tablet provided above.
The battery life doesn’t make things any better. With truckloads of affordable phones providing us with impeccable battery life, I don’t know why Amazon thought 7 hours would be enough.
Coming to the only feature that makes this chunky guy bearable- the Handsfree Alexa! This add-on is perfect for times when you’re bored or just want to procrastinate. Other than the entertainment factor, it’s great for assigning tasks like messaging contacts, setting alarms, checking the weather, etc. To be honest, even Alexa responds faster than the touch screen!
Basically, the Fire 7 tablet is okay in all the aspects but not the best in either of them. The handsfree Alexa is the only factor that makes it attractive. However, it’s great for kids since you can make separate profiles for them and be rest assured of their online activity. There’s a wide range of colorful, kid-proof cases available online so that’s a plus. Moreover, this tablet is a great gifting option, especially for the elders. It’s easy to use and carry around, albeit a bit sluggish in it’s working.
Yes, the Amazon Fire 7 Tablet is affordable but you’ll only be able to make the most of it if you own an Amazon Prime account. If you really wish to own a tablet without burning a hole in your pocket, go for it since there’s hardly any alternative with this price tag available in the market. However, it would be wise to save up further and get your hands on a much better tablet.
