Have you ever wanted to share a Sloth emoji with a friend to say you’re feeling lazy? Or had a specific craving of waffles that you’d like to hint your significant other? These new Apple emojis will make you very happy.
What are they coming out with?
As early as the end of this month, we can expect Apple to roll out with the newly unveiled emoji designs. The designs divided roughly into categories such as food, animals, people, activities, and clothing. Emojis depicting the wildlife include popular animal choices such as the Skunk, Orangutang, Otter, and Flamingo.
Clothing items include the one-piece swimsuit (a trendy alternative to the existing bikini) and an orange safety vest. And we finally have an option for the wedding season! There seems to be a Saree emoji in the mix.
Extreme sports activities like a person Parachuting have also made it on the list. Maybe you can casually slip it to your friends to inform them about your next holiday plans.
Without a doubt, my favorite one is the ‘Yawning Face’ Emoji, which is another variant of the smiley face. I will be using it to get through all the pointless drama. Maybe you’ll like it too.
What’s all the fuss about?
Aside from all the fun new icons, Apple has also placed great emphasis on diversity and inclusiveness. The trillion-dollar company will be releasing a selection of emojis that are disability-themed in a bid to represent all people. Options include guide dogs, prosthetics, and different types of wheelchairs along with an ear with a hearing aid.
Apple proposed the accessibility emojis to the Unicode Consortium over a year ago. Furthermore, it created the 13 new emojis in collaboration with organizations such as the American Council of the Blind and National Association of the Deaf to fairly represent individuals with disabilities. Although these Emojis can’t serve everyone, it is a step further towards an all-inclusive direction by Apple.
Additionally, a significant update by Apple is the change it has made to the ‘holding hands’ Emoji. In an effort to “bring more diversity to the keyboard,” Apple has made it possible to customize the people holding hands. This Emoji has typically been used to represent relationships and couples. Now, users will be able to personalize the people according to what they want. You will be able to select different combinations of gender and skin tone. This feature will enable 75 possible combinations so you can choose who holds hands with whom.
When are they being released?
Apple announced and gave a preview of the to-be-released emojis way back in July 2019 for World Emoji Day. The delivery of these Emoticons come in perfect timing as the highly anticipated iPhone 11 rolled out just recently. According to Forbes, it is likely that these emojis are set to debut along with the new iOS 13.2 updates sometime between October and November.
Can emojis really make a change?
The integration of a diverse range of skin tones and different gender combinations is a noble attempt by Apple to celebrate diversity. Normalizing such realities may seem unimportant. However, for people with disabilities or people committed to interracial relationships, it can mean a lot. In spite of this, the internet has expressed mixed emotions. Some have relayed the fact that Emojis do little to nothing for inclusiveness. While some have conveyed the immense joy that they have finally found an emoji they can relate to. We can all agree to disagree and let the ones who like it be.
Altogether, there are 59 new designs of Emoji. And with all the combinations, there are a total of 230 new emojis in store. They will be made available with the free software update for all compatible Apple products like the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.
All in all, Apple’s decision for a more integrated Emoji set is small news. But it is exciting, nonetheless. We will surely be celebrating Tihar with the new ‘Diyo’ Emoji! 🪔
