One of the most awaited movie of 2019 is here and now in Nepal. Critically acclaimed Joker is rolling soon, and it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. This Superhero movie is one part super and not a lot of heroes. With controversies surrounding the portrayal of Joker who resembled a “Prankster” more than the Clown Prince of Crime, it is likely to be a change DC fans are looking forward to.
Made outside of the DC Extended Universe, this movie is less concerned with rivaling its counterpart, Marvel and puts more effort towards creating a statement. The popularity of Wonder Woman has helped DC get insight. And, distinguish itself from the big-budget and dramatic contemporary superhero action-movies. This standalone movie holds a more intimate feeling and brings us closer to understanding how an ordinary guy could descend into the state of madness. And finally, leaving us with the clowned up killing maniac we know today to be the Joker.
What Makes This Joker THE JOKER
The story of Joker’s origin is as chilling as the character. Arthur Fleck is grappling to find his place in the fractured city of Gotham. Arthur is a clown-for-hire by day and a standup comedian by night. However, the joke always seems to be on him! One mistake snowballs to the point of no return. He slowly graduates into a state of psychosis, and this typical man turns into the Joker. Phoenix’s exploration of Arthur is bone-chilling. The trailer shows him talking in a soft voice one moment and bursting into an insane cackle the next. His state of mind closely resembles the dark environment of Gotham. Where it’s rocky political landscape, and problems of the working class are explored. The trailer keeps you on edge and beautifully weaves the character’s dark fantasies. All signs point toward a beautifully crafted movie that is going to satisfy all fans.
Who’s The Joker Now?
This popular DC villain is portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix who, you may know, starred in previous Award-winning movies like sci-fi romance— Her. Previously sought out by Marvel for roles such as Dr. Strange, Phoenix declined as taking that role would mean a contract for starring on its continuous franchise. Known for his method acting, he lost 24 kgs for his character. Likewise, he read books on political assassinations so he could understand a killer’s mind and does an impressive job of playing Joker.
Director Todd Phillip also has a similar story. He has previously declined other comic-based movies. And told the Los Angeles Times that he found them to be too loud. Thus Phillips made Joker to suit his taste, painting a gloomy and realistic Gotham city. He described the movie to be a slow burn which increased in intensity as the film goes on, unlike other current films. He shared that the movie “feels unique, it is its own world in some ways,[…] It might as well be the thing that scares you the most”. Although he has his fair share of skepticism as well. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese largely influences the movie. Phillips has credited movies like the Taxi Driver and King of Comedy as inspiration, where deranged men strike at those who they feel have done them wrong. He also named ‘The Man Who Laughs’, the original silent film that inspired the conception of the popular Batman villain, as having a significant influence on his movie.
What Can We Expect?
From all the critic’s review rolling in, actor Joaquin Phoenix seems to have kept the clowns legacy. He has managed to portray this version of Joker with ease. From a struggling standup comedian to a person who gradually loses it, Phoenix has charm and builds the neuroses of the character with great skill. Some people are even claiming him to be a close contender to Heath Ledger’s famous depiction. Comparison to Jack Nicholson’s more campy version has also been made due to his bright colored suit and exaggerated makeup. Many fans have expressed great relief that the movie holds no connection with the Suicide Squad and Jared Leto’s modern Joker. Trying to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, majority fans and critics were disappointed with DC’s more “youthful” approach.
Although the internet has made it their mission to rate and rank Phoenix’s performance as Joker, the comparison was not the intention of the lead actor and the director. They wanted the Joker to be independent of any previous holdings. Thus, this origin story of the villain focuses more on character development than the actionable consequences that come later on. So, even though inspirations are drawn from comics such as the admired, Batman: The Killing Joke, it doesn’t anchor on to any previous written stories and films.
Here Comes The Fan Theories
Comic fans have a lot to say about the movie. One of the running fan theories is that Phoenix’s Joker is not The Joker at all. This exists as we see a glimpse of Thomas Wayne alive, and Bruce Wayne as a child in the trailer. The premise of Batman’s arch-nemesis narrative would fail if that were the case unless of course, they showed it in flashbacks. Making a movie on the most iconic supervillain was a smart choice by DC. Amidst low ratings that their films have been getting recently. Joker is coming soon in a very strategic time where few movies which include none of the Superheroes, critics have already predicted its commercial and critical success. So it is likely to make up for DC’s previous shortcomings. So watching it would be making history yourself!
