Qualcomm Snapdragon creates ARM chips for your mobile devices. Surely you are carrying an ARM-based processor in your pocket. Our mobile devices run off a small ARM chip that houses all the components in your system. Now Snapdragon is entering the PC market space with their two new chips, The Snapdragon 8c and 7c.
Qualcomm Mobile ARM CPUs:
After the release of their new Snapdragon 8cx, Qualcomm revealed their new SoCs (System on a Chip) during the Qualcomm Tech Summit 2019. Qualcomm’s new chips, the Snapdragon 8c, and Snapdragon 7c pack tons of new features and enables the mobile connection on your devices. These new ARM processors feature longer battery life, always-on connection, instant wakeup, and powerful processing units. ARM chips might be the future as they provide better battery, small device form factor, and 24/7 connectivity.
The Qualcomm 8c packs a Kyro 490 CPU paired with Adreno 675 GPU. It houses the new Qualcomm X55 5G modem with the support of the X24 LTE modem. Due to its small design and low thermal output, Qualcomm boasted that the 8c would have a fanless design. It’s 30% faster than the companies SD 850 processor.
The entry-level Qualcomm 7c comes with Kyro 468 8-core CPU and Adreno 675 GPU. It supports x15 LTE modem. Quite a shocking feat as the entry-level processor has 8cores. Qualcomm boasted that the 7c had 10TOPS computing power. The entry-level devices like laptops for multimedia consumption, etc. will be cheap after this ARM-based CPU populate the lower-end and entry-level mobile space.
Snapdragon 8cx: Even better than 8c and 7c
The Snapdragon 8cx was the first ARM CPU produced to run full x86 bit Windows. The processor packed Kyro 495 CPU and Adreno 680 GPU. It is made on the 7nm microarchitecture and support for Qualcomm X24 LTE, which has a 70% better connection throughput in weak connectivity areas. It supports dual 4K HDR monitors, H.265 video codec, and Wi-Fi 6.
The Snapdragon 8cx snuck its way on the new Microsoft Surface Pro X. Microsoft tweaked the SD 8cx (called Microsoft SQ1) to uplift the graphical performance. The Surface Pro X boasted a 20hrs battery life, but most of the reviewers got till 9 to 12hrs of battery performance. It supports the Qualcomm quick charge meaning the device would get 50% battery under a minute. The Surface Pro X ran on full Windows 10 with 4G LTE support.
But there were some hiccups; the Surface Pro X didn’t run perfectly. Only a handful of apps ran on the device and didn’t run the full x64 apps. Since the ARM and x64 instruction sets are different, it will be hard to run the x64 apps and will need further optimization. So problems might arrive until the Windows and its application get optimized for ARM-based processors.
This isn’t the first time that an ARM-based chip made it into laptops. Asus NovaGo, Lenovo Yoga C630, and the HP Envy x2 used the Snapdragon 835 processor. They ran Windows 10 S, a modified version of Windows for ARM processors. Now the new Snapdragon processors will be featuring in modern devices like Samsung Galaxy Book S, Samsung Galaxy Book 2, and the already released Microsoft Surface Pro X.
Drawback and Future Implementation:
ARM is based on an entirely new architecture and contains a lot of problems while using different architecture. The ARM processor has got tons of time to grow and prosper. But currently, these processors are on for long stretch.
The ARM CPUs don’t have optimized Windows 10 software, Development on the ARM-based Windows 10 are in the works. The x64 and x86 applications must be ported and optimized for ARM-based processors. Apps like Photoshop, lightroom, etc. are must needed applications for general use. The ARM-based laptops struggle to run these applications. So, better wait for software optimization before purchasing Snapdragon-based processors.
Comparing ARM has more benefits than the current CPU lineup. The Snapdragon Processors works on par with your average computer draining less power and producing less heat. Due to this feature, the processor also has small body design, portable, and can achieve 24hrs to 2 days battery life. Now the question How will companies adapt?
Qualcomm is shaping the ARM-based processor’s future by introducing their new processors. We hope to see more and more ARM-based laptops and computers. Huawei revealed their Kunpeng motherboard with their ARMv8 processors for server and standard desktop PC.
