Snapchat released a new short-video feed service called 'Spotlight' amidst big competitors like TikTok and Instagram Reels. The new feature will allow users to view video content from popular content creators and other users on the app similar to what TikTok does.

Spotlight is housed within the Snapchat app itself like Reels in Instagram. The need to download a 3rd party application promotes usage, however, it is still unclear about how these 'extension' like features do compares to a standalone app like TikTok.

Snapchat aims to broaden connections within the app by allowing video content to float freely across users based on views and interests.

Snapchat's Interests

In the release statement, the company claimed that the feature is focused on the entertainment aspect of social media and that the well-being of Snapchat users is the company's top priority. Given the pandemic situation, and the need of entertainment higher than ever in terms of stabilization of mental health issues, the company found a 'proven' way to bank on the situation.

Launch Information

Spotlight is being launched in the following countries initially with plans to launch globally.

  • USA
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • England
  • Ireland
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Denmark
  • Germany and
  • France

With TikTok under scrutiny in not just the USA, but in countries like India as well, Snapchat has taken the opportunity to infiltrate the video-feed market like Instagram did a couple of months ago with Reels.

With the launch, Snapchat reportedly expects a large activity within its huge 249 million active users as of September 2020.

The Differences: TikTok Vs Spotlight

There are two key differences between Spotlight and existing video-feed service TikTok.

  1. Snapchat claims that EVERY video posted on spotlight will be moderated by a human moderator before appearing on other users' feeds. This ensured that no inappropriate video enjoys even the shortest of stays on the platform
  2. Snapchat has taken the no comment approach with Spotlight. This means that users will not be able to comment on Spotlight videos which eliminated the need for moderation.

As of now Snapchat remains the most popular Social Media service among young people[source]. This is yet another hook for people to cling on.
